FAQs
What is Boothwyn Pharmacy?
For close to a century, Boothwyn Pharmacy has been meeting the needs of patients by preparing compounded medications. These medications are prescribed by a provider when a patient has a need for a customized formulation or if a medication is commercially unavailable or in short supply. Boothwyn Pharmacy has the capabilities to prepare sterile medications (e.g., injectable or I.V. medications) as well as those that do not require sterility (e.g. oral or topical medications) for humans and animals.
Who licenses Boothwyn Pharmacy?
Boothwyn Pharmacy is licensed and inspected by the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy. You can read our latest inspection results here. Boothwyn Pharmacy also holds a non-resident license or permit in other states, and those other states conduct either virtual or in-person inspections as well. Because we prepare compounded medications, we are also inspected by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
How can I be assured that I am receiving a safe medication?
Boothwyn Pharmacy holds the highly respected PCAB accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Health Care. Moreover, we test GLP-1 medications that we make for sterility, endotoxins, and GLP-1 potency before shipping them – period. This rigorous process exceeds United States Pharmacopeia (USP) standards and puts patient safety first.
How can I get access to compounded medications from Boothwyn Pharmacy?
A prescription is required for a compounded medication in every single instance. Providers, such as physicians or veterinarians, work closely with compounding pharmacists at Boothwyn Pharmacy to ensure that a formulation best meets the needs of the patient. This tends to be a more direct relationship than the process for a traditional, non-compounded medication. To better understand this relationship, think of a triangle with the three points being: provider, pharmacist, and patient.
I read that Boothwyn Pharmacy got fined by the State of Pennsylvania. Why?
This relates to a compliance issue that was administrative in nature and not clinical. It pertained, essentially, to a permitting oversight; our compounded medications are ALWAYS prepared in rooms certified to USP standards. Nevertheless, we have made major operational changes across our company.
What kinds of changes have you made?
We have:
Replaced our management team, including the addition of new Quality Manager, Compliance Pharmacist and Director of Pharmacy Operations positions;
Overhauled our entire Quality Assurance function, including new reporting procedures and enhanced facilities;
Conducted comprehensive staff retraining on USP and Current Good Manufacturing Practices and updated and reissued Standard Operating Procedures; and
Reinforced our longstanding program of independent third-party clean room certification and validation, ensuring continued compliance and strengthening of our quality systems.
Have there been any adverse events?
There have been no major adverse events reported to date.
